MSU Apprenticeship Program

MoASBO is excited to partner with Missouri State University and school districts to develop sustainable leadership pipelines through innovative apprenticeship pathways. Together, we are creating opportunities that enable future leaders to earn, learn, and serve, thereby strengthening Missouri’s schools and communities.
This comprehensive program blends coursework, conference-based learning, and real-world application through an internship and capstone experience. Participants will gain practical, hands-on experience in:

Budgeting and financial planning

Accounting and reporting practices
-
Compliance and Missouri state requirements
-
Leadership and decision-making strategies
This program is ideal for current and aspiring superintendents, school business officials, and district leaders across Missouri.
Program Components
Core Coursework
Participants will complete a series of foundational courses, including:

Preparing for Your ASBR and Audit
-
Accounting Concepts and Principles
-
Accounting Codes
-
Property Assessment and Setting Your Tax Rate
-
Planning the Budget and State Requirements
-
Projecting and Budgeting Revenues and Expenditures
-
Creating the Budget Summary and Writing the Budget Message
-
Emerging issues in district leadership
Each course includes measurable objectives and real-world applications aligned to Missouri school finance practices.
Spring Conference Sessions
Participants will attend and engage in specialized sessions during the MoASBO Spring Conference, which expand on key topics such as:

Guide to Signing Contracts and Agreements

Labor Relations and Contract Adminstrations
-
Debt Planning and Management
-
Cash Flow and Future Forecasting
-
Activity and Enterprise Funds and Fund Accounting
These sessions provide networking opportunities and exposure to current trends affecting Missouri school districts.
Internship Experience
A structured internship provides participants with hands-on experience in a school district setting.
During the internship, participants will:

Work alongside experienced district leaders
-
Apply financial and operational concepts in real scenarios
-
Observe and participate in decision-making processes
-
Gain insight into day-to-day district leadership responsibilities
Program Fee
Fee is $950, plus required to attend annual spring conference with that additional cost to the student.
All fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. A credit card is the method of payment. (Note: Charges will not apply until the individual is accepted into the program.)

Registration is through the MoASBO portal, which is a comprehensive platform for managing essential information about your district and you. Moreover, the Portal facilitates event registration for both members and non-members.
