A Message from MoASBO Executive Director
A Message from MoASBO Executive Director
Dear colleagues,
Last week, I spent a few days with the MoASBO board, learning about board governance and leadership. ASBOI's Leadership Forum is an annual event for this group. The board governance piece is part of our new board member orientation process.
Why does this matter to you? Why should you care about the MoASBO board's professional learning?
Because:
- Your governing board is held accountable for the welfare of MoASBO. Your board sets the strategic direction for this professional association.
- Board members typically have had no professional training on how to be an effective board for a not-for-profit association. Their frame of reference is a board of education, which is not the same as an association board..
- “The experience and commitment they bring to the boardroom are not sufficient for successful service. Your board is more likely to become the asset it could be and should be if they comprehend your board’s collective roles and their responsibilities as an individual board member.” The Governing Board by Nancy Axelrod
- They are modeling a commitment to continuous improvement and growth.
I am proud and honored to work with a group of dedicated and committed professionals who are willing to devote time and energy to this valuable learning. I appreciate their service to the profession and to MoASBO.
Sincerely,
Kim
