Member Spotlight: Matthew Bollwerk

This month, we are excited to spotlight Matthew Bollwerk, a relatively new but passionate member of MoASBO. Although he has only been with us for a year, Matthew is already making remarkable strides in his role and within our organization as the 2025 Emerging Leader recipient.

Question: What is your favorite part of your job?
Response: The best part of my job is knowing that my work behind the scenes is crucial in supporting students and staff. Ensuring that they have the necessary resources and tools to succeed is what truly motivates me.

Question: What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Response: One challenge I’ve faced, and which I wish more people were aware of, is finding the balance between efficiency and compliance. Many people don’t realize how much detail goes into following purchasing policies and procedures. It's about protecting the district, and articulating the 'why' behind these processes can be tough when some see it as just buying something, said Matthew.

Question: Can you share an achievement that makes you proud?
Response: A highlight for me has been the implementation of furniture standardization across the district. This initiative not only ensures better quality and consistency but also promotes long-term savings. Additionally, I was recognized with the Emerging Leader of the Year award in April and get to attend ASBOI this year as the Missouri Emerging Leader. 

Question: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Response: Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends, playing golf, and indulging in anything related to cars—whether that's working on them, participating in sim racing, or watching motorsports.

Question: What advice would you give to new school finance employees?
Response: For those new to the field, I recommend being patient with yourself as you learn the systems and regulations—there's a lot to absorb. Ask questions, build relationships, and remember that the details matter. Accuracy and consistency are key in this field, said Matthew.

Question: How has MoASBO helped you?
Response: Since joining MoASBO, I have been provided with a robust network of colleagues to reach out to for advice and collaborative problem-solving. I’m especially looking forward to the annual conference to learn more about best practices and connect with fellow school finance professionals.
